Counseling and Transfer Services

ARC Counseling provides students with personal and academic counseling to help students achieve their academic and career goals. Counselors are available to help make sure students start off on the right track by developing an education plan of the courses needed to achieve their goal of an Associate's degree, transfer to a four-year institution, or completion of a certificate; even if you’re unsure of your educational goal. Our counseling team is here to help you succeed! If you are new to ARC or currently attending, we encourage you to see a counselor at least once a semester but you are welcome to see one as often as you like. Counselors can assist with the following needs:

  • Help determining your academic, career or personal goals
  • Educational planning
  • Evaluation of courses taken at another college
  • Overcoming barriers in achieving your goals
  • Petitioning for graduation
  • When having difficulty in your courses or if you have been placed on academic probation/dismissal

Distance Counseling Appointments

Enjoy the convenience of web-based counseling (Internet and Web cam required)

ARC now offers distance counseling appointments. You can enjoy the convenience of web-based counseling from your home, office, or actually anywhere that you have an internet connection and a webcam.

Distance Counseling is ideal for students who are not on campus regularly or are distance education students or who cannot conveniently get to campus for in-person counseling appointments.

Distance Counseling is NOT ideal for students who:

  • Are new, first-time college students
  • Are not familiar with the basics of how to use a computer
  • Lack access to a computer that has a working webcam, microphone and speedy internet connection
  • Need in-depth/specialized counseling (disability, EOPS, athletics)
  • Need crisis counseling
  • Have not submitted transcripts from other colleges yet
  • On academic or financial aid dismissal

Requirements

Access to internet, computer with a webcam and sound (headset works best)
Know how to adjust settings on a computer with a webcam and a microphone/head set
Transcripts from other colleges on file at ARC prior to appointment. (Allow at least 2-3 weeks for processing.)

If you are a fit for this criteria and are interested in participating, follow these steps:

Install Google Plus on your computer and set up a Gmail account. To set this up, just go to google.com (recommend Google Chrome), select Gmail and/or +You.
After you have set up your +You Google account, follow the instructions below to set up your counseling appointment.
As soon as you have made your appointment, send an e-mail to CounselorAndre@gmail.com from your personal Gmail account.
Before your appointment, make sure to check your settings to make sure your webcam and microphone are working properly.
A couple of minutes before your appointment time, log into your Gmail and wait to be "invited to hangout".

How to make a Distance Counseling Appointment

Select on the button below to schedule your appointment. By clicking the link below, you are agreeing that you meet the criteria outlined above and that you will send your official transcripts (sealed envelope) from all other colleges and universities you have attended at least 2-3 weeks prior to scheduling an appointment. Send to: American River College, Admissions and Records, 4700 College Oak Drive, Sacramento, CA 95841. If you may unable to do this, you can email unofficial transcripts to the counselor prior to the appointment, but the Counseling Center does not keep unofficial transcripts on file. Unofficial copies are only used for the purposes of the appointment for that time only and will not be available for future appointments. Remember to return to the steps above and finish steps #3-5 after making your appointment!

If you do not have access to/familiarity with a webcam and microphone, but meet other criteria listed above, please contact the counseling department at (916) 484-8572 to discuss making a telephone counseling appointment.

Please note that participating in Google Hangout counseling discussions is a service of convenience offered to students, but in no way guarantees confidentiality beyond what the normal parameters the Google Hangout service offers. Please see Google Hangout disclaimers for more info.

  • Have all of your outside* transcripts sent to ARC Admissions and Records at least two weeks in advance of the appointment to allow time to process and scan into our system.
  • E-mail CounselorAndre@gmail.com from your personal gmail account so she knows who to invite to the Google Hangout Session at the time of your appointment.
(Your ARC gmail account will not work with Google Hangout.)
  • Check your settings before your appointment time to make sure all of your settings on your webcam and microphone are working properly.
  • Log into your gmail a couple of minutes before your appointment time, and wait to be "invited to hangout" from the counselor. (Or you can invite the counselor to start the hangout as well!)

If you forgot your Student ID, you can look it up in eServices

Please ensure that we have received the transcripts from any other colleges you’ve attended before your appointment. If you haven’t finished any math or English successfully at another college, you’ll need to take assessment tests prior to the appointment. You can contact the assessment center by clicking here or calling (916) 484-8423.
