Security Guard Training

The American River College Public Safety Training Center offers Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) certified Basic Skills for Security Guards (40 hours) and BSIS Elective courses (each at 8 hours) with courses conveniently offered in the evenings at the Public Safety Training Center.

Security Guards in Demand

The CA Employment Development Department (EDD) indicates that the need for security officers throughout the state is increasing. For the state, EDD projects that jobs for Security Guards are expected to increase by 15.4 percent, or 23,000 jobs, between 2014 and 2024.

For the Sacramento region, EDD projects that jobs for Security Guards are expected to increase by 17.9 percent. In the Sacramento region, entry-level pay for security guards ranges from $18 to $24/hour.

Affordable Basic Skills Course

The BSIS-certified Basic Skills for Security Guards (40-hour) course is significantly less expensive than the same course offered through private providers, where a student may pay up to $300. Through the Public Safety Training Center the course costs $105.00 and students receive 2.0 college units through American River College. Courses are held at the Public Safety Training Center . Remaining dates for 2018:

Affordable Elective Courses

The Public Safety Training Center  also offers BSIS elective courses for the required yearly 8 hours of continuous professional training for security guards. There are two different BSIS elective courses each semester. Similar courses presented by private providers cost $80 or more. Each 8-hour elective course at the Public Safety Training Center costs $22.50 and students receive .25 college units through American River College. Students can take one or both courses.

Skills Training for Security Guards - Elective A

BSIS Elective A consists of 4 hours of training in officer safety and 4 hours in handling difficult people. This course is offered once, each semester, during the evening. Courses are held at the Public Safety Training Center . Remaining dates for 2018:

Other Public Safety Training Center courses that may meet BSIS requirements include our 40-hour PC 832 Firearms Familiarization Course and our 24-hour PC 832 Arrest, Search & Seizure course. These courses are held at the Public Safety Training Center and meet during the day.

The Public Safety Training Center also offers a new 40-hour Introduction to Loss Prevention course (not affiliated with any state regulatory agency) which provides potential and new loss prevention agents with foundational knowledge in the detection and response to theft incidents. Other Introduction to Loss Prevention courses offer only 10-hours of training. This course is offered once, each semester, during the evening. Courses are held at the Public Safety Training Center .
