The North Valley and Mountain Biotechnology Center was founded in 1998, and is funded by a grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. The center is a successful project of the Economic and Workforce Development Program of the California Community Colleges. Its primary focus is to facilitate and improve the community college's effectiveness in assisting in the development of the biotechnology industry, and to aid in the training and development of a motivated and qualified workforce for this rapidly expanding industry. This skilled and diversified workforce will add to California's economic growth and global competitiveness in a variety of markets. NVBC is one of only four regional biotechnology centers in the state of California. As such, its role in community and state economic growth is constantly expanding and adjusting to meet the ever changing needs of employers and colleges. There are over 12 community colleges in the North and Far North regions of the state. NVBC StaffJeffery O'Neal - Statewide Initiative Director
I am a molecular biologist whose 20-year career in research laid a rich foundation for his current role as Center Director. His experience in both university and industrial settings since 1977, places him in a unique position of mediator between the academics and economics of biotechnology. His research led to the award of United States and international patents on biotechnology products. His tenure as coordinator of the University Extension Biotechnology Program at the University of California at Davis led to increased awareness of the needs of the implementation of biotechnology education. He has been director of the NVBC since August 1998.
Heather M. Brown Ph.D. - Program Director
My research background is in Molecular Neurobiology and teaching interests include Molecular Genetics, lecture and lab techniques. I greatly enjoy working with students and creating engaging curriculum that will stimulate student interest in science!
Ken Kubo Ph.D. - Biology and Biotechnology Instructor
I am a professor in the Biology Department at American River College, where I teach biotechnology and microbiology and coordinate the American River College Biotechnology Program. I received my B.S. in Medical Microbiology at Stanford University and Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. After graduate school, I did postdoctoral research at the Institute of Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon. My research work focused on DNA rearrangements and gene regulation in E. coli and maize. Before joining American River College, I was program director of the BIOTECH Project, a high school biotechnology outreach program at the University of Arizona. At American River College I still continue my outreach work with high schools, and much of my work is done in collaboration with the North Valley Biotechnology Center at American River College.
