Gerontology is the study of human growth and development during adulthood. It includes the psychological and physiological changes that touch each individual, as well as the social implications that flow from these changes.

American River College has gained a reputation as a leader in gerontology studies and has been awarded National Program of Merit Status by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), making it the first community college in the nation to receive this honor and one of only eight colleges and universities so designated in the country.

The Gerontology program at American River College offers specialized training for employment in businesses and agencies that provide services for the elderly, and/or preparation for upper division work in gerontology. ARC has gained a reputation as a leader in gerontology studies. The program is co-host for the Alzheimer's Aid Society annual conference, and co-hosts events with AARP, California Council of Gerontology and Geriatrics (CCGG), and UCD Family & Consumer Sciences. This leadership has enriched its offerings and enhanced the career value of an ARC gerontology degree or certificate.

  • A Gerontology Associate in Arts (AA) Degree (in the chosen concentration) consisting of the required 30 core requirements, plus 9 units of concentration of choice, plus the general education requirements. For ARC graduation requirements, click here.
  • A Gerontology certificate, consisting of 30 core requirements, plus 9 units in concentration of choice.
  • Three vocational certificates are offered in the areas of Activity Coordinator, RCFE Administrator and Social Services Designee.
  • Four specific interest certificates are available: Dementia Care, Elder Care, Ethnicity & Aging and Leadership in Assisted Living Communities.
  • Continuing education courses for RNs, LVNs, CNAs, RCFE Administrators, LMFTs, LCSWs and Nursing Home Administrators are available.
