Homosocial: Icons and Reliquaries works by Brian Van Camerik will open at Kaneko Gallery on April 15th and run through May 15th with a special lecture on Thursday April 18th in Raef Hall 161 at 12p.m. to 1:20p.m. There will be a reception for the artist and exhibition following the lecture at 1:30p.m. at Kaneko Gallery. We invite everyone to attend both! Below is a a statement from the artist.

"Homosocial (www.homosocial.xyz) is a LA based queer project that amasses images of homosocial couples and creates reliquaries, icons and other quasi-religious original art. Artist Brian Van Camerik of Homosocial creates these objects with vintage images of same-gender couples from the past to envision a future in which all people can appreciate and embrace the beauty of homosocial relationships.

Pulling from old photo albums from decades ago and attics of households across the globe, Homosocial collects images of same-gender couples. Created by artist Brian Van Camerik, Homosocial is a queer historical project that houses and enshrines these found photographs into original works of art. Come learn more about the project and Van Camerik’s queer sensibility with black and white photography at the Kaneko Gallery on the American River College campus.

When you hear the term ‘homosocial’, what do you think? Is it something gay? Perhaps a social event? Or maybe the new missing link for Homo sapiens? While those guesses may not be correct, the answer could be more queer than you thought. Come explore the project Homosocial; a creative and queer endeavor helmed by artist Brian Van Camerik to show imagery of same-gender couples from the past in quasi-religious art forms.

Borrowed from academia, the term ‘homosocial’ doesn’t mean homosexual, but connotes something queer in nature. It is a nuanced term that describes the same-gender themes of media such as movies like Thelma and Louise or Fight Club, but it doesn’t exactly describe ‘gay.’ Come learn more about this unique concept at the inaugural exhibition of Homosocial: Reliquaries and Icons at the Kaneko Gallery on the American River College campus."
