Typical Services

All support services are available at DSPS through the General Disabilities Support Services Department. To request services you must first set up an appointment with your academic counselor and, your counselor must complete a Service Request Form to make you eligible for receiving support services.

Tutor:

Assists students in specific subject areas. Helps student to identify and clarify problem(s) while providing encouragement, and fostering independence and self-confidence. Scheduling of tutoring sessions is based upon tutor and tutees open time. Tutoring must be done on campus.

In-Class Aide:

Will assist students who have physical disabilities. This may entail getting "hands-on" assistance with library research, computer usage, laboratory classes, etc. Based on the disability needs, your in-class aide may or may not have taken the course.

In-Class Notetaker:

Will assist students who have difficulty taking notes or are unable to physically take notes. You are responsible to locate an in-class notetaker from your class.
NOTE: Your notetaker can be hired on either a paid or volunteer status.

If your notetaker would like to volunteer without filling out any forms (application, payroll etc.), you need to contact the General Disabilities office at 484-8707 and inform us regarding the volunteer notetaker from class. This enables us to update our records and make sure that you are receiving services. Your notetaker will NOT be on file with the DSPS.

If your notetaker would like to volunteer and earn credit, you must have them complete the student aide application and return to the General Disabilities office asap.

If your notetaker would like to get paid, you must have them complete the student aide application and return to the General Disabilities office asap.

The procedure to locate an in-class notetaker is as follows:

If you know a classmate who is willing to be your notetaker, please have them complete the student aide application and return to the General Disabilities office asap.
If you don't know anyone in class, you can also have the instructor announce to see that if someone's willing to share notes with you, and then make sure you refer the person to us. Have them complete the student aide application and return to the General Disability office ASAP.
Upon receipt of the application, the General Disabilities office staff will contact your notetaker and process them accordingly.

Out-Of-Class Notetaker:

Will assist students who have difficulty taking notes and are unable to locate an in-class notetaker. An out-of-class notetaker will be assigned upon the discretion of the General Disabilities office staff.

Reader:

Will assist students who have difficulty in reading independently by reading onto tapes. The materials that will be read include textbooks, handouts, articles, etc. Materials must be provided to the General Disabilities office prior to Christmas break (for the spring semester) or prior to the summer break (for the fall semester). If you fail to do so you must contact the General Disabilities office at 484-8707 asap. It is not guaranteed that the materials dropped off to the General Disabilities office during the regular ongoing semester will be completed.

REMINDER: Make sure you have a Service Request Form completed by your counselor to be eligible for receiving support services.
Upon receipt of your service request form, the General Disabilities office staff will try to match you with an aide for the services requested. You will be notified only if there is a problem meeting your needs. You must contact the General Disabilities office for any change in phone numbers or if you drop a class that was requested for services.
