Our History and Purpose
The James Kaneko Gallery has been on campus at American River College for over twenty years. We serve the students, faculty, staff and the greater Sacramento community at large. Our gallery schedules eight shows a year beginning with the Fall Faculty Exhibition and ending the school year with The Annual Student Show in the spring. We have exhibitions of art by the Northern California Region's best and most notable artists including Ken Waterstreet, M. Louise Stanley, Michael Stevens, Suzanne Adan, Gary Dinnen and many others.
This gallery is operated by the students of the "Art 442: Gallery Operations class" and by the "Art 444: Portfolio class". They help choose and install the different shows, keep the doors open and they count each visitor who walks through the door. We consistently have over one hundred people at each opening reception and at least a thousand people will visit the gallery for each of our shows. We are one of the jewels in the crown of American River College.
Our main purpose is to serve the students in our various classes and to re-enforce their chosen fields of endeavor. We have various exhibitions that address the media taught here, such as painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, digital media, sculpture, ceramics and photography. These shows are chosen carefully keeping in mind the previous exhibitions. We seek out local artists to emphasize the fact that the greater Sacramento region is a hotbed of visual art, but at least two shows a year are brought from places like San Francisco and the East Bay.
We try to address the needs of the various student populations that attend American River College by exhibiting the works of Native Americans, African Americans, artists who are handicapped and many other representative groups of artists. We are always looking for artists who will address our very large ARC population. We work with the different Sacramento galleries and with local art collectors to augment our visual programming. We offer the artists the use of our gallery where their work is premiered with a well-attended reception. We offer these artists a chance to explain to the students how they create their artworks.
This is not just a student gallery, it is a professional venue and we work constantly to keep it that way.
