The annual national contest sponsored by the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) consists of 2 rounds: one round in the fall semester and one round in the spring semester. The fall exam will be given in the latter part of October.
Each round consists of 20 multiple-choice questions on a variety of topics in precalculus mathematics: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, functions, graphing, probability, combinatorics and elementary statistics.
To take the exam, one needs to be a community college student at a participating community college. To take the exam at American River College, one needs to be a student at American River College.
The top 5 scores in each round form the American River College "team." The college, then competes informally with other community colleges around the state and the country. Members of the team receive certificates to honor their accomplishments. Support the ARC Math Team with your participation and go ARC!
AMATYC Results Round 1 Fall 2011
We had a great turnout of 73 students who participated in the AMATYC this fall. Many thanks to Chris Heeren, Joe Caputo, Vince Jones and Cristina Domokos who volunteered to help with the seminar and encouraged students to get involved and participate. The AMATYC Exam was a tough one this time, but our students did great with a team score of 98.5 finishing ahead of other colleges in the Sacramento region and placing 29th overall in the United States.
