ARC Earns Recognition from Tree Campus USA Program
ARC has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as part of their Tree Campus USA program. ARC is one of only 4 California community colleges as well as one of only 13 two- and four-year California colleges and universities to receive this recognition.
The recognition follows a lot of hard work by a team of staff, faculty, and students. The Tree Campus USA program recognizes college and university campuses that:
- Effectively manage their campus trees
- Develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy, urban forests
- Strive to engage their student population utilizing service learning opportunities centered on campus, and community, forestry efforts
ARC's service learning project was a crowd-sourced tree inventory where 25 volunteers geo-tagged each of the trees on campus with their cell phones. To date, the count is at 1,384 - with more than half of them identified. The next phase will be to have them all identified and all of the tree markers around the campus identified as well.
"American River College is honored to receive this recognition from the Tree Campus USA program," said ARC President Thomas Greene. "This acknowledgment is a testimony to the great work being done by our college community. As part of our ongoing commitment to the values of sustainability, we will continue to work towards maintaining this recognition for the future."
