Located at American River College's Student Center, inside the HUB, the Pride Center supports a safe and inclusive campus environment for students, staff, faculty and community members by building an understanding of sexual orientation, and gender identities, and gender expression.

Aligned with ARC's Strategic Plan and in accordance with the college's commitment to social justice and equity, the ARC Pride Center is committed to the diverse LGBTQ+ community on campus. The Pride Center is also dedicated to addressing the intersection between LGBTQ identities and other LGBTQ community members who have been traditionally underrepresented and disenfranchised. The Pride Center affirms the need for a space to share and disseminate information, challenge and dismantle negative stereotypes, and serves to facilitate dialogue about marginalized orientations, gender identities, and intersex people in a non-judgmental atmosphere. The center is committed to advocating for improvements in campus climate regarding LGBTQ issues and student success.The goals of the Pride Center are to:

  • Assist LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff with any challenges they may have related to their gender or sexual identities
  • Assess and strive to improve campus climate for LGBTQ+ people
  • Educate the campus community on how to best serve LGBTQ+ students
  • Create a supportive and developmental community environment for LGBTQ+ student

These goals will be accomplished through research, educational trainings, and direct services to students. 

Dr. Joshua Moon Johnson

Dean of Students Services, Equity Programs & Pathways: Dr. Joshua Moon Johnson (He/Him/His)

Joshua serves as the Dean of Student Services, Equity Programs and Pathways, where provides direction to student life, diversity and identity-based services, and outreach and recruitment. Joshua previously served as the Assistant Dean/Director of the Multicultural Student Center at the University of Wisconsin- Madison and as the Director of the LGBT Center at UCSB. He has published three books; his first book, Beyond Surviving: From Religious Oppression to Queer Activism was a #1 Best-seller on for Gay & Lesbian Activism. Joshua's second book is a co-edited volume about LGBTQ leaders in higher education, Authentic Leadership. Joshua's newest book is Queer People of Color in Higher Education. Joshua received a doctorate in higher education and a certificate in LGBT studies from Northern Illinois University, and a master's degree in social sciences, student affairs, and diversity from Binghamton University, State University of New York.

Dr. Emilie Mitchell

Pride Center Coordinator: Dr. Emilie Mitchell (She/Her/Hers)

Emilie Mitchell is the coordinator for the American River College Pride Center. In addition to her work with the Pride Center she is also a faculty member in the Psychology department. Emilie earned her PhD in Psychology from the University of California, Davis in 2006 and  joined the faculty at American River College in 2012. In addition, Emilie is a dedicated mother of two children, a proud lesbian, an avid home improver, Darwinian gardener, passionate educator, and social justice advocate. As coordinator she and her staff provide a network of resources, support, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ students. The Pride Center and  American River College recognize that LGBTQ+ students often face particular hurdles in attaining their educational goals. The Pride Center is here to help come on in and see us!
